Abstract:Our school has set an experimental area of garbage classification in the range of the first to the fifth dormitories of the west campus. And the present situation of the garbage classification in the experimental area is still an open problem. To solve the problem, we conducted an investigation. And the purpose of this investigation is to examine the present situation of the garbage classification in the experimental area. During the investigation, we firstly used a questionnaire which contained some questions about garbage classification as well as some questions about the opinions about the garbage classification in the experimental area. Also, we went to the experimental area for observation for 5 days (1 hour per day) to observe whether the students really did garbage classification when they took out the trash, and whether the dormitory administrators urged the students to do garbage classification. Then the empirical results presented some evidence that many students lacked the knowledge of garbage classification (81.50% of the students didn't give the right answers to the half of the questions about garbage classification) and most of the students (90.11%) didn't do garbage classification when they take out the trash. Also the dormitory administrators didn't urge students to do garbage classification, they just did garbage classification themselves after the students take out the trash. And some students (55.46%) thought that the distribution of the garbage cans was unreasonable while some students (80%) thought that the garbage classification publicity was not enough. And most students (64.71%) lack the consciousness of garbage classification. So we can conclude that the present situation of the garbage classification in the experimental area is unsatisfying. It is recommended that the university should strengthen the management of garbage classification and let students learn more knowledge about garbage classification. Also the students should try to learn the relevant knowledge on their own, and do garbage classification following the regulation.
1. Introduction
The nonstandard garbage classification is a problem that has been plaguing the whole world for a long time. [1]According to the report on the production of municipal solid waste of the Ministry of ecological environment in 2017, the production of municipal solid waste in China is large and difficult to deal with. The top three cities in terms of waste generation are Beijing, the second and third largest cities in terms of waste generation. Shanghai and Guangzhou generate 9.018 million tons of waste, 8.995 million tons and 7.377 million tons of waste, respectively. However, the nonstandard garbage classification makes it a big problem for us to deal with such a huge amount of waste which brought environmental pollution waste incineration and cleaning up a lot of electricity for urban construction. [2]So at the beginning of 2017, the National Development and Reform Commission and the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development jointly issued the “Implementation Plan for Domestic Waste Classification System”, which requires the pilot classification of domestic waste in 46 pilot cities. Shanghai is the first to open waste classification. It is expected that China’s prefecture-level and above cities will be basically completed before the end of 2025. A garbage sorting system will be built (iimedia,2019).
College students, as the representatives of high-level and high-quality talents in China, their situation of garbage classification is not optimistic. For example, [3]a survey conducted by Li Ruining (2019), a student from Shanghai University of political science and law, indicates that 41.2% of the students in their school have not classified garbage, and 41.7% of them have not paid attention to garbage classification. [4]Also, a research shows that in Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications The number of people who can accurately understand recyclable waste, kitchen waste, hazardous waste and other wastes only accounts for 22.79% of the total number of respondents (Gao Dawei,Chen Yuhang and Liu Yuhe .22). [5]Coincidentally, a research report on the garbage classification of 13 universities in Chongqing pointed out that in the aspect of garbage classification, the vast majority of garbage cans with classification have not been well classified, and they are nothing(Yang Jian, Wang Jingzeng and Dong Wenxuan.26).
Our school has set an experimental area of garbage classification in the range of the first to the fifth dormitories of the west campus. But the present situation of the garbage classification in the experimental area is still an open problem. The purpose of the research is to investigate whether the students classify the garbage.
2. Methods
Firstly, the research was conduct by questionnaires students who form the range of the first to the fifth dormitories of the west campus. There are 9 questions in this questionnaire, 6 of which are answered correctly as the test. The other 3 questions are to investigate their opinions on garbage classification and the reasons that affect their garbage classification. Among the 119 questionnaires, 64 are from the school of electrical engineering, 33 are from the school of business, 16 are from the school of civil engineering, 6 are from the school of mathematical information and science. Besides, we went to the experimental area for observation for 5 days (1 hour per day) to observe whether the students really did garbage classification when they took out the trash, and whether the dormitory administrators urged the students to do garbage classification.
3. Results
3.1 Firstly, there are 119 students living in the experimental area who did the test about the knowledge of garbage classification. And there are 31.93%(38) students who got 0 scores, 29.40%(35) students who got 20 scores, 20.17%(24) students who got 40 scores, 13.45%(16) students who got 60 scores, 3.36%(4) students who got 80 scores, and 1.69%(2) students who got 100 scores(full marks).
4. Discussion of Results
4.1 From the first result we can find that there are 81.50%(97) students living in the experimental area who could not get 60 scores. And it's evidently that most of the students living in the experimental area don't have a good knowledge of garbage classification, which has in common with the fourth result(there are 95 students among the 119 students who think they don't know much about garbage classification).
4.2 From the Second and the third results we can find out that both of most of the students and the dormitory administrators in the experimental area don't do their duty. On the one hand, most of the students(90.11%) didn't do garbage classification when they took out the trash, which has in common with the fourth result(there are 77 students among the 119 students think that it's inconvenient to do garbage classification), on the other hand, the dormitory administrators didn't urge the students to do garbage classification, from which we can conclude that the management of the garbage classification in the experimental area is not normative.
4.3 From the fourth result we can conclude that there many (55.46%) students living in the experimental area who don't feel satisfied with the distribution of the garbage cans. And many students(64.71%) living in the experimental area think it's inconvenient to do garbage classification, from which we can conclude that there are many students living in the experimental area who are too lazy lack the consciousness of garbage classification. Also, there are many students(80%) living in the experimental area who think that they don't know much about garbage classification, so we can conclude that the students' knowledge of garbage classification has not been evidently improved since the school set the experimental area of garbage classification.
4.4 There are still limitations, for example, the quantity of the students living in the experimental area whom we investigated is still not large enough.
5. Conclusion
From the part of “Discussion of Results” ,we find that there are many students of the experimental area who lack the knowledge of garbage classification and are too lazy to do garbage classification and the dormitory administrators don’t do well in supervising students. All in all, the present situation of the garbage classification in the experimental area is unsatisfying.
6. Recommendation
6.1 The school should strengthen the management of the garbage classification in the experimental area. For example, they can give more pressure to the dormitory administrators in order to make them pay more attention to the management of the garbage classification in the experimental area, the school can also arrange some special staffs to manage the garbage classification, and the school can punish the students who don't do garbage classification reasonably. Also the school should organize more activities to let students learn more about garbage classification.
6.2 To the students, we think that they should try to learn more knowledge about garbage classification on their own, and they should also do garbage classification following the relevent regulation.
6.3 If there are someone else who attempt to do the similar research, they should investigate more people to get the more accurate results.
