Abstract:How to improve and cultivate the writing abilities of middle school students is very important in English teaching. Students can improve and cultivate their own writing abilities by the following ways: to teach students some basic knowledge and skills about writing; to correct students’ mistakes in time; to strengthen their own writing abilities by themselves in listening, speaking, reading and writing.

The purpose of middle school English teaching is to improve the students’ four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing on the base of necessary phonetics, large vocabulary and good grammar, but this is not the final purpose. The final purpose is to let students be able to use the language. That is to say, students can listen, speak, read and write. At the moment, most of the English teachers are trying their best to make their students improve their written English. However, how to improve writing level is not so easy. You should put hearts into it and pay much more attention to the grammar knowledge and writing skills and so on. I will share my ideas about how to improve our students’ writing level.
Ⅰ、To teach students some basic knowledge and skills about writing.
Words and phrases are the key to writing. As is known ,a sentence is made up of words and phrases. Before we begin to write, we must grasp a large number of words and phrases, understanding their function and use. If we are familiar with them, we can apply them freely and correctly. In our teaching we should ask students to remember and understand the words and phrases which have been learned. At least students can make sentences with them without mistakes of grammar, especially some important words and phrases in each unit must be paid more attention to. Usually I ask students to make sentences or write a short passage with these words and phrases.
Ⅱ、To let students listen more, speak more, read more and write more to improve their writing abilities.
Listening, speaking, reading and writing are linked together. They do not exist separately. We can’t only train writing. With students’ listening, speaking and reading improved, they are good at writing gradually. At last they have made great progress in writing. What’s more, a language is not taught but learned. Interest is their best teacher. As an English teacher, while you train these four skills, you’d better make full use various ways to stimulate students’ interest. Let students listen more, speak more, read more and write more. I think they are sure to write out good English compositions.
Ⅳ、By these ways we can improve and cultivate the writing abilities of middle school students in our English teaching in order to make sure that our students can pass the English writing exams. At the same time we should let our students improve themselves in listening, speaking, reading and writing so that they can really use the English language. That is to say, they can communicate with others well.
