Abstract: English advertising is a material that we can learn from, which includes some language points that we neglect. The main research direction of this subject is environmental protection public service advertisements. This article expounds the linguistic characteristics of English environmental public service advertising from syntactic features.
key word: environmental protection; PSAs; syntactic
Body: The structure and wording of advertising sentences have simple characteristics. In order to express more complex and in-depth ideological content that attracts the attention of the public and can be understood by people, noun phrases often appear in English environmental protection public welfare advertisements, and statements, command sentences, and interrogative sentences are often used.
1.Declarative Sentence
Different PSAs use a certain number of declarative sentences to achieve the effect of persuasion, especially when showing the meaning of PSAs. It states objective facts while trying to guide the audience into beneficial action related to the subject. This requires that the language expression of the declarative sentence must be objective and credible. In fact, all the words of PSAs should be reliable, objective and persuasive, so the statements frequently appear in PSAs. There are many expressions of declarative sentences in environmentally friendly English public welfare advertisements. Environmental public service advertising uses a large number of statements, which is conducive to increasing the authenticity of advertising.
2.Imperative Sentence
In addition, imperative sentences and interrogative sentences also appear in public service advertisements. They are commonly used for emotional talk in public service advertising. Imperative sentences usually start with “Please”, “Don’t”, “Let’s” “Donate”, “Call”, etc., and then use request, invitation, persuasion, appeal, and so forth to convey different intentions. Because viewers are often used to accepting persuasion, demands, or encouragement in their favor, imperative sentences are widely used in enhancing persuasion. As shown in the following example: Let’s?work?together?to?build?a?world?that?can?truly?sustain?all?life?on?earth.?
3.Interrogative Sentence
Questions are also used in public service advertising. Interrogative sentences, usually including general interrogative sentences, special interrogative sentences, and antonymous interrogative sentences, can attract the attention of the audience, and thus cause the audience to further think and act. Sometimes interrogative sentences can serve as hints.
4.Clauses
The main function of clauses is to make the sentence structure more reasonable. In English, many words are used to explain a clear meaning, and the sentence structure becomes complicated. Sentences are too long, and the use of clauses can make the sentence structure more reasonable. Specific clauses can be divided into attributive clauses, adverbial clauses, object clauses, and so on. In English PSAs, it can be found that clauses are rarely used. If clauses are used a lot, the syntax structure of PSAs will be too complicated and the educational significance of PSAs itself will be lost.
Conclusion: Nowadays, with the development of society, the economic levels of various countries have been continuously improved, but the damage to the global environment has also become greater and greater, and environmental protection public welfare advertisements have emerged at the historic moment. Using environmental public service advertisements as learning materials, the language features can be discovered. In English environmental public welfare advertising, they have they own language system.
